  • Not had a problem with any PC's so far...touch wood. But thanks for the warning.

  • Had the same problem. Was forced to put the update in the ignore list... Are you by any chance running any custom start menu apps (like StartIsBack or similar) ? That could cause some issues, but I'm too lazy to redo all the settings...

  • StartIsBack screwed us over with the 'black desktop' issue, it seems to be a conflict with StartIsBack+ versions earlier than 1.7. From the 1.7 changelog: "Fixed problems with KB3000850 update installed"

I installed latest SIB version via "New Task" option in Task Manager and immediately the desktop/start menu re-appeared

A few PCs - a cross between Startisback and Classic Shell, but the problem manifested itself in several non-modified systems as well after the fact.  I'll take a look at that variable more closely tomorrow.  Good thought.

  • Hi!  ^_^

For the record: I had the same problem using StartIsBack. The optimal way to fix it was reinstalling StartIsBack by going to Task Manager using Ctrl+Alt+Del in the "black screen", then "File", "Run new task". Then, look for the StartIsBack setup, run it and click all "Next" until it reinstalls. You'll notice that the desktop will run without problems from now on. Even old versions of StartIsBack will work (I'm using 1.7, not 1.7.5).  :)
If you haven't StartIsBack's setup with you, you can wait like 20 minutes in the black screen and desktop will show up.  ^_^
    Hope you'll find it usefull.

Greeting from Buenos Aires, Argentina!  :D

  • I went back and reconfirmed it.  Several users had no start menu installed, so it's not limited to just Startisback or Classic Shell.

  • I had the same issue on 4 different HP laptops.  StartIsBack installed on all.  I troubleshot it down to this one update and then used that to find this thread!  Wish I would have found this thread first !!!

    * note - to uninstall the update I did

    1) ctrl-alt-del and went to task manager

    2) file - run new task and typed "control panel"

    3) clicked on Programs and Features

    4) clicked View Installed Updates and then found/uninstalled KB3035131

  • But... reinstalling StartIsBack solves it too and you can keep the update from Microsoft. Also, if you uninstall it you probably get the update installed in the near future if you not put it in the blacklist. :$

  • For us, it was:

    Startisback or classic shell agnostic

    AMD based system

    Windows 8.1

And yes, we did notice it more often on the start menu installed PCs, but it happened on systems that didn't have it installed, though a smaller fraction.

  • Hmmm... I took a look at the summary of the update in the knowledge base (http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035131) and noticed that it fix vulnerabilities related to elevation of privileges. StartIsBack and Classic Shell "hijacks" the Explorer.exe using elevated privileges at desktop's startup. ColoradoGeek, maybe you had in those computers without StartIsBack some kind of software that use those kind of privileges?  :O

  • Negative, that was one of the first things I looked at, due to the very same information  :)

  • As I see it, in the broader scope of things - we've got two very solid ways to "fix" the problem, and that's cool with me - the mission of this post has been accomplished.  Inform others, get feedback.  Win-Win.  :)

  • In all our computers that have come in with this KB3035131 Update that installed, We noticed they were all Windows 8.1. No 8 Or Pro or 7 computers had this issue. Was there any others that any of you found? We have put StartisBack on a multitude of PCs with Windows 8.1. It took me approximately 12 hours to figure out which update it was and how to fix it! We have had about 30 clients come in with the same issue. I just uninstalled StartIsBack from a clients computer and the update will not show it's ugly head! I am concerned that Microsoft is putting these out to discourage people from using these Menus. As I sit here working on another clients computer that had the 5131 recently it now has a new update that has cause the same issue KB3045999. Any one come across this as of yet?

  • I had this issue today on my W8.1 Laptop...after a quick google I found all I need to do is uninstall KB3035131 and a reboot later it's working! Microsoft buggered this 1 up!!

  • KB3035131 Was the First of 2 Updates that caused a "Black Screen" On the second KB3045999. The second one only happened on Windows 8.1 with Startisback, I removed the startisback first then installed Classic Shell, Has worked like a gem! I have had over 2 dozen computers in with the 2nd one and they all had StartisBack.

  • We still see the issue on non SiB and CS computers, but for the most part, it does seem to be confined to just those software packages lately.

  • My Dad likes to use the classic shell plugin and he was experiencing this issue as well. Uninstalling the SIB plugin and running the update allowed it to proceed as needed. After the update was applied he rebooted and installed his classic shell plugin and it worked as needed.

Hope this helps and good luck!
