  • Hi James,

Interesting... Will deploying a 2012 R2 Std instance with Server Essentials Experience installed, and connecting it to our Exchange Online tenant, will that provide us with SSO access to Exchange Online for desktop Outlook clients, replacing DirSync or ADFS?

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Hi James,

You have made it look quite easy. Too much PR sweetener. The Ms documents mainly refers to "new" creations and less about the migration of existing systems.

We are currently moving the whole organization onto the O365 cloud. Though we are moving from multi platform environment (exch 2007, exch 2010, linux mail etc.), even the migration from a single Exchange Server environment to the O365 Exchange Online is a bumpy ride. Especially if you have thousands of mailboxes, packed with over 2Gb mails on each. Apart from the time consumed on the migration of old mails, the setting up, the throttling, setting up of DirSync servers, ADFS loadbalancers, IdM/SSO integration, it makes it even harder ; but not impossible.

Depending on the size of data and users, the migration can take between 3 to 6 months. Not even mentioning about recreation of global address books, groups, room reservations, or OneDrive, Sharepoint integration that needs to be setup separately.

  • Good point, delicious.

We are planning to do a Cutover Migration (Exchange 2010 on-prem, with only 60 or so mailboxes), so hopefully a little less bumpy than you're referring to... Do you happen to know if this Server Essentials Experience role will do away with the current requirement for DirSync or ADFS?

Hey Delicious, nice post! What you are talking about is a completely different world then what this OP was for. The Server Essentials role is just for single domain organizations with up to 100 users and 200 devices.
