  • We use the same notebooks and docking stations. Sadly I can offer no direct assistance as we use two monitors with VGA connectors and connect one with a display port to VGA adapter.

  • The article I gave was the only thing I have found regarding these docking stations.

I haven't been able to find anything else to resolve this problem.

Derek, I can't use the Fn key while the laptop is closed.  I want to be able to set the laptop in the docking station and use 2 external monitors.

  • On one that I'm working with the monitors go to sleep during boot and I need to flip the undock button off then back on and the monitors come back on.

  • PFunk, did you get your dual monitor with the UltraSlim Dock 2013 issue resolved?  Daren's post triggered a review of the post?  I regret that I did not respond earlier.  As Tim indicated the document to which you reference does not apply to the EliteBook 850 G1.  For the notebooks referenced in the document the solution given is to use only 1 Display Port and then the VGA port.  However for the notebooks for which this dock was specifically designed (including the 850 G1) the text states both Display Ports can be used.

I found a post on the HP Forum that may be helpful.  Click here.  You will notice in this post that the problem was caused by a discrepancy in the default Microsoft and the original HP drivers.  "HP has released a newer driver for 8.1."  A review of the HP driver download site shows that the driver is also available for Windows 8.  The firmware is entitled "HP 2013 Ultraslim Docking Station DisplayPort Hub Firmware" and is described as:

    • "This package contains the EEPROM firmware required to enable the DisplayPort hub used on the HP 2013 Ultraslim docking station. This package is provided for supported notebook models running a supported operating system."

Click here for the firmware download.  Daren, thanks for your post and hopefully the firmware upgrade will resolve your issue.

  • Priscilla,

I have applied this firmware update and still am not able to use both Display Ports.

It does however (so far) seem to be working now with 1 Display Port and 1 VGA cable for the two monitors.  Before I would have to unplug and plug back in the Display Port cable once Windows booted up for it to recognize it.

I will keep trying to reproduce that problem but so far it seems to work.

I'm not sure why it won't work with 2 Display Port cables though.

  • PFunk, appreciate very much your update.  Good to see some positive news after the firmware update.  However, it is disconcerting that both Display Ports are not working after the update.  I'll be happy to discuss or have you discuss this with Tech Support, but I will need your product number, serial number and contact information.

  • I am having the same issue that PFunk is having, even after installing the firmware update.  The computers are 840G1 and the slim docking stations.  Using 1 Display Port and 1 VGA.  Upon docking the Display Port does not come back up, just the VGA.

  • I had a similar issue when we upgraded to larger monitors.

For one model we were able to install the monitor driver update.

For another we were able to disable the input auto select on the monitor and set the correct input.

For another we were able to disable auto power off.

For another we never did find a solution and returned them.

Jeff (@Mr. Ng), yes, our office has bought a large number of the USB adapters and have used them successfully.  Some members in this Community have also used them.  Perhaps they will share their experience with the product in this post.

  • We had this issue recently trying to set-up 3 monitors on the HP Z230 Workstations.

HP support eventually sent across an information page which explains you need to use DVI-D and DP in a certain configuration, or only 2 screens work.

  • BobbyMcnellis, can you post up that information page?

I'm also having a lot of issues getting this same setup working for a client who has requested it.

using any combination of cable adapters tried, I can't get 2 external monitors to work without them being cloned - laptop will not recognise them as 2 monitors being connected, despite correct Dual DVI adapter being used.

I have tried, using proper cable adapters:

    1. DP to Dual DVI
    2. VGA > Dual DVI
    3. DP > HDMI > Dual DVI

For most I get corrupted screen graphics (this is NOT  cable issue as can be replicated on different cables and monitors), but

the HP device above looks to be a re-branded/boxed version of the Startech unit (exact same specs) here:

    Can someone please confirm whether:

    1. these units need to support BOTH of the external monitors (rather than supporting one via this unit, then a second monitor from the built in DP or VGA port on the laptop),

    and

    2.  whether these units might be a  more successful choice than a Matrox Dual head to Go SE

  • I use a HP 2013 Ultraslim Docking Station and am able to use multiple monitors via VGA & Displayport (Win7 Ent 64b Win8.1 Ent 64b)

However when we were shipped the HP 2013 Ultraslim Docking Stations there was a paper insert advising that you could not use duel DP out as this was developed for future releases and was to be upgraded via firmware at a later date (no exact date given).

The second last firmware update that was released for the docking stations ended up causing my BIOS to have display an ME error on boot.  HP have just released a newer version of the firmware release which I am yet to test.  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?lang=en&cc=us&am...

  • My company has been having issues with this as well and just spent 2 hours yesterday talking to tech support about the issue. I have rolled out 50 zBook 14's and have had issues with about half of them when it comes to populating multiple monitors on this dock. I have some users that have no issues but there are some that have to undock and redock a few times to get the displays to populate and there are some that i have to physically disconnect a monitor for the displays to work. For the most part its just an irritation to the user.

  • we gave up - not worth the effort.

these little devices are far better, work seemlessly (you may need latest display link driver from Displaylink site, not the manufactrers) and cheaper to boot:

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down
  • The DisplayLink products should help here to add multiple monitors. The drivers are available on our site, and there is a list of dicking stations avaialble with in various enclosures and video output types:

    http://www.displaylink.com/shop/docks

HP have their own DisplayLink docks too: HP3005 or the HP Universal Port Replicator (with charging)

We also have a compatibility check, which looks for outdated drivers (especially USB 3.0 host controller drivers) which we know can have problems when you connect a high USB bandwidth device to a computer, like a USB docking station:

  • Hi,

I have 850 G1 with ultraslim docking station and dual display ports work well. I try connect 2 monitor using display port cable and it works. But I have problem with heating. When I connect even one monitor to display port on docking station, it use only ATI graphics card, which produce heat and fan must work all day. When I connect it directly to laptop, Intel graphics recognize external monitor and manage it. Then in few seconds overheatings gone and fan turn off.

Do you have any solution, ho to use Intel graphics for docking display ports?

  • Hi Janopano,

I am having exactly the same problem using the HP ZBook 14 and the UltraSlim docking station. Whenever I connect a display on the DisplayPort of the docking station, the AMD GPU renders all content on the display. GPU memory usage is 100% and the laptop gets very hot. If I connect the display on the DiplayPort of the laptop everything is fine. I just updated my AMD and Intel drivers, no solution so far.

  • A very large client & I encountered this with their Department of Transportation field laptop deployment. Our solution was to use the Targus universal dock. They have been using this successfully for about 4 months now and the solution was blessed by HP too.

It proved to be the most stable and did actually fix the issue 100%.

  • Priscilla,

Another major problem we have noticed with the 2013 UltraSlim docking station is with the Elitebook 850 G1s.

We have all the latest drivers from HP as well as the latest Docking Station firmware (Oct 30, 2014).

When we have 2 monitors plugged into the docking station (doesn't matter if it's 2 displayport cables or 1 displayport & 1 VGA) and we power the laptop on with the laptop lid closer, we get a BSOD every time.

If we power the laptop on with the lid open, then the laptop will boot up just fine.  I have tried multiple computers on multiple docking stations and it has been consistent everywhere.

  • Hi Priscilla,

I already have the latest docking station firmware installed, makes no difference. I’ve been checking the GPU usage using the HP Performance Advisor tool. It seems that once you have connected a monitor to the docking station using DisplayPort, the GPU is used to steer this screen. From that moment, the GPU memory usage is 100%. In addition, whenever there is a ‘change’ on the screen (e.g., moving of the mouse pointer), the GPU load indicator jumps >50%. When there is a lot of screen updating (typing a text, watching a movie, etc.), the GPU usage is constant at 100%. This is why the fan starts blowing like hell and the computer gets warm/hot.

Since other people experience the same problem it seems to me that it is not my unit which is defective but rather a driver issue happening here.

  • Hello Members,

Once again we regret your UltraSlim Docking Station challenges.  Here is the response received from the HP product manager:

"Regarding the docking issue, it was recognized and a huge firmware revision released in June. .... If you received your dock before July 2014, please go to HP.com/support/download drivers; type in your model number and search for the 2013 UltraSlim docking stations firmware. Read the disclaimers, including instructions to ensure appropriate download. This should correct your problem.

If your dock is July or newer, please place another case and provide the number.  I need this to escalate."

As I've shared with some of you behind the scene, if you have an unresolved case with Tech Support regarding this issue, please ping me with the case number which I will share with the product manager who will escalate the issue on your behalf.

  • Hi Priscilla,

Thanks for the effort. I do not yet have a case with Tech Support on the problem. As I live in Belgium I doubt that the Product Manager could help me out on this one. My docking station was bought after July 2014. I already addressed the problem to my local HP provider, but they want me to bring in the laptop. Not only is this very unpractical, I also strongly believe the issue is with the docking station (of associated firmware/drivers) and not with the hardware of the laptop itself.

    Anyway, thanks for your interest!

  • Hello Precilla,

I see that this seems to be a wide spread issue and I am currently working with HP support to try and fix this issue for my users. We are using the zBook 14 with the UltraSlim Dock 2013 and about half of my 60 z Books have the issues of running warm when docked. Also when the laptop goes to sleep or stops sending signal to the dual monitors when the use tries to wake the system the monitor do not repopulate. Usually the user has to do one of a couple things, unplug the DP cable and re-plug it, undock and re-dock or having to do a full restart. We love the z Book when its off the dock but it has become very frustrating considering we have had rock solid performance from a competitor in the past. I really hop we can find a way to resolve this issue.

And Priscilla can you post the link to a PDF of the newest product support since i cant seem to find anything newer than April 2014. • We bought one year ago about 100x HP Elitebook 840 G1 and 80 Ultraslim docking stations and some EliteDisplay E231 (so all HP brand).

We are facing the same issues and this is very annoying. At the beginning we didn't discover this as most had only 1 external screen, then now we have more and more requets then more and more problems :-(

Technically it "should" work as we are able to display correctly at startup, but has soon the computer enter into screensaver the config is lost..

It has been 1 year runing with these kind of problems, even after several firmwares/drivers updates, (BIOS 1.30A, dock 2.24) latest drivers of December and it is still not working as expected...  Not sure to continue with HP...

  • We are also having this issue.  We have a 850 G1 and Slim dock 2013.  We have two external displays connected, one VGA and the other DVI with a DP->DVI adapter.  Randomly the display port connected monitor will go to sleep and we have to unplug the adapter or disable and reenable the monitor in windows settings to bring it back.  I've tested every configuration, using DP to VGA adapter as well as DP to DVI, as well as switching the monitors that was connected to the DP, and every time the one that was connected to the DP was the one that died.  It seems this is a common problem from more than 2 years ago, so why isn't there a solution yet?

Christopher, sorry you are also experiencing the same issue as others in this post.

    1.  HP has acknowledged that there was a problem and updated the firmware to address the issue.  See in the reply above:

"Regarding the docking issue, it was recognized and a huge firmware revision released in June. .... If you received your dock before July 2014, please go to HP.com/support/download drivers; type in your model number and search for the 2013 UltraSlim docking stations firmware.      If your dock is July or newer, please place another case and provide the number.  I need this to escalate."

    2.  Here is the link for the firmware for your model.  Click here

    Firmware

    2.24.000 A(30 Oct 2014)

    3.  If the updated firmware doesn't resolve your issue, you need to have a case created with HP Support.  You can call HP's excellent EliteBook Premier Support Team at 866 625-1175.  If you do create a case, please ping me with the case number so an engineer can be assigned if there is no resolution as a result of troubleshooting. Let me know if you have other questions.

  • I have a fairly simple question in case any of the HP techs are still lurking about this message chain.  Is an "HP UltraSlim Dock 2013 US" with the latest firmware loaded, supposed to be the same thing as a "HP UltraSlim Dock 2014 US?"

I only have one 2014 model on hand to fool around with at the moment, but I've been messing with it for the past several hours and I've yet to experience any of the difficulties with monitors waking up from "Put the computer to sleep" or "Turn off the display" modes, that I had/have been experiencing with the 2013 docks.

Simply for the record, our standard build which is deployed using SCCM is Windows 7 Professional, 64bit.  The EliteBook 840g1's I've been tinkering with have the latest BIOS, and the 2013 docks have the latest firmware.  The AMD driver in our build is a bit old, it wouldn't support 'portrait' mode on the external displays, so I have been updating that driver to the latest version from the HP web-site.  I tried installing the latest Intel video driver, but then the notebook would restart when waking up from sleep, so I no longer update that driver.

After hours and days trying to isolate the reason why the displays wouldn't come back on... I tried a 2014 dock, and have yet to experience a single issue.

    Any thoughts?%uFEFF
