  • Here goes, take it with a grain of salt :)

It does look very '80s...which isn't a good thing. When you add in the name with "Business Machines" it says typewriters to me.

And the green lines coming in from the left look out of place imo.

  • Thanks!  That's exactly the type of feedback I'm looking for.  Much appreciated.

  • And here I thought you were talking about Commodore Business Machines...

The font choice for your three letters does seem dated. Can you do something more like APC's logo (without infringing on their trademark?)

  • That font reminds me of children's TV. That might be because I grew up in the 80s, but it is definitely a bit dated. I echo Sosipater on the green lines, especially as they don't match the thickness of the lines in your name.

IMO a logo should be punchy. If you have an abbreviation use that or the full name, but not both.

  • I totally looked at that and said "Awesome, what a cool retro logo."  Then I realized that it is the original, lol.

I kind of like it.  It's cool again.  Ten years ago, I would have said it looked dated.

That's what I thought too.  My first computer was a CBM Pet.

Do you feel that way because IBM used to make typewriters?

I didn't make the connection honestly, but now that you mention it...

IBM has done a good job of branding IBM, not International Business Machines. Probably for similar reasons as what I listed. Business machines sounds very mechanical.

  • I agree that it looks very retro. In fact it's reminding me of a Logo from TV (Show or studio) in the 70's/80's but I can't think of which one. Almost Soul Trainish.

Well, that's what they made.  Typewriters and mechanical computing devices.

Retro good or retro bad? That's one of those words that can go either way... :)

I'd say retro as in outdated and needing a revamp. Even if just dropping the green lines, and lopping the tail off the M. Many logos these days give an indication as to what a company does. I would have no idea that you guys sell/service power equipment.

That's what I figured you meant.  Thanks much!

  • Retro is cool but seeing the name spelled out makes the business seem out of touch (typewriters etc.)

  • IBM actually got their start making meat slicers - true fact - I had to go through their orientation or I wouldn't have known...

And for what it's worth, I think they still make a few things - mostly mainframe AS/400 type stuff. They've sold most everything else off by now.

  • I like the logo! It's different and reminds me of Tron which is such an awesome movie. I would just remove the clutter. Remove the green thing and the 'coastal business machines' and the LLC.

I know this is probably copywright infringement but you can also keep the line-design of the letters but just update it a bit: http://font.downloadatoz.com/font,25248,tron.html <-------to something like that.

  • Happy New Year, and thanks for your feedback a few months ago!  I took your suggestions to our CEO and President, and made a compelling case for a re-do.  Since then, we've been quietly working on a new name and brand.  Introducing CoastTec, powered by CBM!  Check us out at www.coasttec.com, and see our new logo.  Interested to hear your feedback!  Thanks again!

Much better! My only dislike for it is that the power symbol in the O is centred as a whole, rather than having the round part centred...
