Today in History: 1934 - Federal prisoners land on Alcatraz

A group of federal prisoners classified as “most dangerous” arrives at Alcatraz Island, a 22-acre rocky outcrop situated 1.5 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay, on August 11, 1934. The convicts—the first civilian prisoners to be housed in the new high-security penitentiary—joined a few dozen military prisoners left over from the island’s days as a U.S. military prison... Great read of Alcatraz. Thanks

Robin Williams was an absolute genius IMO.  As a Scotsman, loved this (among just about everything else he did)

  • Alcatraz, there's a piece of history. I remember growing up near San Francisco watching, and hearing about all the different phases that place went through over the decades. Ya gotta love a government that can't make up it's mind.

Apparently our government still doesn't know what it's doing. :(

  • Inspirobot - I actually think Inspirobot is spot on today.  It seems to me that some dogs sense when you're trying too hard.  With them, you can't "try" to be in charge, you have to be in charge.

I could write a short book on raising our alpha-female Doberman.  It was an adventure.

1984 During a radio voice test, US President Reagan jokes he "signed legislation that would outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in 5 minutes." I remember hearing about this in the news.  Wonder how long it took the red phone to start ringing.
1944 Ian McDiarmid - Darth Sidious: I thought it was spelt Ian McDirmond.
2014 Robin Williams - One of the best actors ever (carpe diem!): carpe risus (seize the laughter!)
1994 Peter Cushing - actor (Grand Moff Tarkin): OBE, thank you. Brilliant stage and screen actor.
QotD: “You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” - Robin Williams.  Corollary, "I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity." --Poe

  • " Mouseover: "Pronouncing [ṡṡċċḣḣẇẇȧȧ] is easy; you just say it like the 'x' in 'fire'.""

This word reminds me of the meme where the fish attacks the person's finger through the glass (this is a short, but the fish is in it)

  • We did a night tour of Alcatraz during a full moon and it was a blast. See it while you can because eventually it may not be around. They used salt water to make the concrete and chemicals and time are working their magic.

  • One of my favorite skits is Robin Williams outakes from Sesame Street, where he is showing Elmo all the things he can do with a stick. You could see how quickly his mind worked. Not a single second is wasted, his humor was contagious.

I used to watch the TV Show he was in called Thunder in Paradise. As a kid I thought it was great, I am pretty sure it was a terrible show though.

  • I highly recommend listening to the podcast series on Alcatraz done by Last Podcast on the Left. It is extremely informative and entertaining. The Birdman of Alcatraz didn't really do any significant research and just lived amongst hundreds of birds in a regular sized cell. Sound cute? Just imagine the rancid smell of that much bird sh*t, they didn't let him continue his research because his cell was literally a health risk.
