  • We finally figured out a workaround for this, it was painstakingly difficult to figure out but did it in the end!

A combination of deploying this registry entry via a powershell script to all of our devices, and configuring some print/PnP policies in Intune resolved this.

Special shoutout to alanmorris for advice both here and on reddit!

    • Is the universal driver a V4 driver by any chance? If yes you will need to ensure the driver pack is on the workstation before trying to install as V4 drivers are not downloaded from server to workstation and often the install will default to the P and P driver because the correct driver is not available.

I'm with PaperCut. I opened a work item for our Print Deploy development team to be better than Microsoft.

For connections to shared printers using a Type 4 driver as The Repairatrooper states, Type 4 driver files are never copied from the server to the client system.

If the vendor has their Type 4 driver on Windows Update, the clients will get the driver from the same source.

If you really need to rely on Windows Point and Print, then I suggest locking down your client systems to only be allowed to connect to shared printers only from your print servers and allowing Standard Users the ability to install Type 3 print drivers.

PaperCut has Mobility Print if you find it is time to dump Windows Point and Print.  Mobility Print is another way for the clients to send files to the server.   I weep since I spent many years at Microsoft making the print system more friendly.

      Thanks
