Oh wow really? It seems like a no brainer then if you have a lot of VM's you want to run on a single ESXi host? (assuming you don't need to purchase too many core packs).

I was also reading online that you can use KMS to activate Windows Server, and MS provides these publicly for free? When would you use the KMS keys? If they're free, can't anyone just simply download a copy of Windows Server and perpetually use it forever for free?

    • No, what Microsoft provides for "free" regarding KMS are the publicly available KMS keys.  These keys don't do activation - they tell Windows to seek out an existing KMS server on your domain.  Your KMS server is where your real activation keys are stored.

Ah, that makes much more sense, thank you for clearing that up!

One more question; if I were to purchase 1 Windows Server Standard license, since it allows 2 VM's to be hosted on it, could I instead just spin up 2 VM's with Window Server Standard on ESXi so I don't have to use Hyper-V?

    • You're allowed 2 VM's per Standard license.  Doesn't matter your choice of Hypervisor.

Perfect, thank you so much for the clarification!

    • If you buy Windows Datacenter for licensing, you can and probably install Windows 20xx Standard in the VMs.

The reason is that for 99.9% of cases, Standard and Datacenter have the same functionality, but you can move a Windows Standard VM to basically any host with the relatively inexpensive Windows 20xx Standard license, and a Windows 20xx Datacenter VM can only be legally moved to a host licensed with the much more expensive Datacenter license.
