  • We were able to discover the issue. The day before this all happened, a Dymo label printer was installed on the print server and it modified the UNIDRV.dll, UNIDRVUI.dll, and UNIRES.dll files. This caused issues with all the other printers since pretty much every printer driver accesses these files for their properties and preferences pages. After restoring the files from a backup, we were able to resolve this issue.

    • This issue is seen when the devmode for the printer, these are registry entries containing settings for the printer, is corrupted OR the driver used by the printer does not handle the registry entries properly.

I've seen these failures for the past 20 years,  this is nothing new.

Was the driver for the printer on the server recently changed or updated?

You can run down the registry setting but it's not worth your time.

Rebuild the printer with the latest driver so you do not have to rely on the vendor to handle old settings with a newer driver.

I'm building a new print server with the newest drivers and we're still getting the same issues as we were with the old print server. This seems to be a recent occurrence with no noticeable change on the old print server either.

    • Are you using V4 or V3 drivers? If you updated the V4 drivers only on the server you now have a mismatch as V4 drivers do not automatically download from the server to the workstation.

We have a mix of Type 3 and Type 4 and both are doing it even when first added to a system. I've been testing on my laptop pulling down printers from the server and it doesn't seem to have a rhyme or reason that I can point to. Many of the printers are using the HP UPD which is Type 3 but, we've been getting this on other printers as well.
