  • Not really. You can treat it like a dumb switch. Whatever untagged vlan you assign to the port you connect it to on the first switch will be the only LAN it has. Managed switches act as a dumb switch until configured otherwise. I would recommend setting an ip and setting a username and password for it and recording it's ip, mac and the username and password.

  • Like Justin7819 says, you can use the 2nd switch as a dump switch, but I recommend you config an IP address. However, if you plug the 2nd switch to the 1st switch in one of the 4 VLANs, only traffic of that VLAN will be going to the 2nd switch. For example, if you plug the 2nd switch to the port of the 1st switch in VLAN 4; the 2nd switch will only be in VLAN 4 traffic.

  • disagree with the above.

yes you need to configure it. you need to configure it for how you need - which I know might be hard for you to work out at this point.

Best advice is to use the first switch as an example and basically copy nearly everything. To implement a switch linked to the other where all 4 vlans work so you can use any of them do these critical things:
create the vlans on the new switch. for each vlan set the spanning tree priority higher than the default
configure the fibre uplink port to the 1st switch - set the port to trunk mode. Do the same on the 1st switch for the fibre port it will use.
Ideally give it a hostname, ip address login details etc all using 1st switch as a reference but unique ip/name. Connect and test.
Set ports to the vlan they need to use.

If you do just 'connect it' then it will work for vlan 1 only.
