Favorite fictional astronaut is Bruce Willis in Armageddon. I have to give him props due to his recent medical diagnosis.

    2. Star Wars Day / Mother's Day

I didn't really learn it but I noticed that Obi Wan Kenobi was very patient with Luke. Patience is definitely needed when you deal with kids.

Who's looking forward to the series? me me me.

  • 1. Astronaut Day for sure and the Astronaut of choice is Billy Blast Off.

    2. What I learned from Star Wars: don't let your creepy uncle with the over-inflated ego baby sit your son.

    3. I had a boss with a serious stuttering problem that only showed up when he was really mad, so we always made efforts not to antagonize him.

    4. I raise mason bees but my drawing abilities are bad so I will not insult them by drawing but do take lots of pictures. Here is one leaving the nest after a long winter.

    5. My dad was definitely not a geek, he fell asleep during Star Wars, in the theatre.

  • 1. World Password Day / Astronaut Day.

Related Task: tell us your favorite password-related story, policy, or software.

Alternatively, tell us who your favorite astronaut is (or cosmonaut or anyone who has gone to space, even fictionally)

So many to choose from, so I'm going to go with someone that was probably my first favourite - Buck Rogers.

    2. Star Wars Day / Mother's Day

Related Task: For all you Star Wars fans, tell us some good parenting lessons that you learned from the Star Wars franchise.

Alternatively, if you aren't into Star Wars as a model of parental behavior, you can just tell us one quality you admire in someone you look up to. :)

I agree with HulkSmash72 about Obi Wan and patience, but I'm going to go with Shmi Skywalker and her willingness to make sacrifices for her child's benefit.

    3. Stuttering Awareness Week / Mental Health Awareness Week

Related Task: tell us something that you've struggled with in your life and how it has changed the way that you interact with people.

Alternatively, tell us something you do that improves your mental health.

"Switching off" from work (like I did for most of the past 2 weeks) can provide a wonderful mental break from a major source of stress.

    4. Bee Day / Drawing Day

Related Task: draw a bee and share your drawing with the class... err I mean, the community. :)

Alternatively, if you aren't really into bees, or you know, are deathly allergic to them, go ahead and draw a different insect, or post a picture, or just tell us about a different insect that you like.

It was tempting to vote "Firefly" in the survey above, but that was largely tongue-in-cheek due to enjoying the adventures of the Serenity crew ... Butterflies are probably my favourite: I love their beauty and gracefulness, plus I love the illustration of that beauty and completeness of developement can come through struggle - butterflies need the struggle of hatching from the cocoon for their wings to properly form.

    5. Towel Day / Geek Pride Day

Related Task: using the definition of Geek as "a person who is fascinated with a certain complicated subject,"tell us your favorite geeky hobby or something else that you geek out about.

Alternatively, if you don't really think of yourself as a geek, just tell us about something you like.

Definitely a geek! - of technology in general and computers specifically.  Check out the Geek Code, both at Wikipedia and here.

    Suzanne (Spiceworks) I kill me!

I was talking with a hospital IS/IT Director, and he told me about three nurses that shared passwords.  I told him I have an answer for that, but not as a corporate employee.

    1. Get supporting documentation.
    2. Call the three offenders into a meeting.
      1. Have a member of physical security stand out of sight outside the door.
    3. Explain to them why sharing passwords is a bad idea in general and against policy at work.
    4. Open the folder with the documentation on one of the ladies and fire her in front of the other two. Have physical security escort her out.
    5. Tell the other two this is their last warning.

He said that was harsh, but it would get the point across.

  • 1. World Password Day / Astronaut Day - My favorite Astronaut would probably be the Futruama crew. Each of them had the right balance of quirkiness to make the show great with Phillip being the weirdly savant that never knew anything but had everything at the same time.

    _____

    2. Star Wars Day / Mother's Day - Although Star Wars was a good film series, my parenting skills are a combination of what I've learned throughout my life so far and include the things that I don't like and know I need to change. The broken family I grew up in had a father with a quick temper and a mother that will guilt you into things. I've taken these and slowly learned the opposite of them and even done my best to make sure my LO knows I love her and that it's okay to cry even for daddies.
    _____

    3. Stuttering Awareness Week / Mental Health Awareness Week - Stuttering for me has always been a test of patience because sometimes the other person is nervous or excited about what's happening. I've always tried to help others feel calm and understand that if they need to take more time to slow down I'm okay with that. This has come about when I finally realized I had dyslexia and had been living with it for years and never had a name for it. Once I had a name for it I could learn about it and saw so many times where I was getting frustrated because I didn't understand what it was. It helped answer why it takes me time to read, understand formulas, and check my math for flipped signs that get me the wrong answer. Once I had a name and understood that, it helped me be more patient with and for others.

    _____

    4. Bee Day / Drawing Day - I'll probably draw some with my LO when this day comes around, but for now my favorite insect is the Robber Fly AKA Assassin Fly. I love the extra long legs they have and how innocent they look until they grab a bug and jab their hypopharynx into the thorax or abdomen.

    _____

    5. Towel Day / Geek Pride Day - Tesla Coils, magnets, and simple motors like Stirling Engine. I don't know why but I've always enjoyed the idea of a seemingly simple pile of junk possibly being a deadly high energy contraption that could be powered by something simple like a Stirling Engine. I've always felt these motors could be constructed and used especially now that we have brushless motors and bearingless motors. This would be amazing to see several small devices setup to just run in parallel/series to generate power near hydrothermal vents or even near springs.

The best story for awareness for some teachers. You know why we don’t write our passwords down and tape them to paper under our keyboards? A student failing the class logged in and changed his grades.

Honesty. Telling it like it is even if everyone doesn’t like the answer is something I admire in anyone.

    3. STUTTERING AWARENESS WEEK / MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

    3. Stuttering Awareness Week / Mental Health Awareness Week

The week of May 9 is Stuttering Awareness Week in the US, although I hadn't heard of it before I started writing this. (I have a very mild stutter when I am stressed or trying to talk too fast.) According to THIS page, one in every 25 children in the US has some issue with stuttering, and the day is usually celebrated by medical institutions who give children who stutter a safe place to talk without fear of being misunderstood or mocked. I'm guessing the numbers would be similar in the rest of the world, so maybe something to be aware of for all of us. Mental Health Awareness Week is the same week, but starts on Tuesday instead, which is also something that is often mocked and stigmatized, but which is frequently less obvious.

Related Task: tell us something that you've struggled with in your life and how it has changed the way that you interact with people.

Alternatively, tell us something you do that improves your mental health.

Trying new things, particularly food has kind of been a challenge for me or things that I think of all the ways that can go wrong. I had a few coworkers keep talking about horse riding and how i should try it. I knew some about them due to a friend that raced all i remembered was like bad things COVID, changed work schedules, and thinking one day being an I.T manager I thought if I can't go into something with an open mind or get over my concerns I will probably have a hard time. I finally did a trail ride by the end I was somewhat comfortable then wanted to do again to get real feel for it then I went even more and onto riding lessons. I think helped change how i see trying new things, fear VS respect, and I think makes you more aware on picking up ques, etc. Also have to have trust and respect if a horse wanted to it could easily do anything it wanted to you.

    4. Bee Day / Drawing Day

Bee Day is celebrated on May 20th worldwide. The movement to create the holiday was started by the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association in 2014 and officially recognized in 2017. Just a few days before that (on the 16th) is drawing day, so you know, let's do a mash-up and draw some bees! Also, check out the favorite insect poll below. :)

Related Task: draw a bee and share your drawing with the class... err I mean, the community. :)

Alternatively, if you aren't really into bees, or you know, are deathly allergic to them, go ahead and draw a different insect, or post a picture, or just tell us about a different insect that you like.

Like bees pollenate things, but not so much they sting, I think praying mantis are neat but kind of scary too they are sort of like prehistoric in some ways but also kind of impressive what they can do for their size.

    5. Towel Day / Geek Pride Day

Geek Pride Day on May 25th is the brainchild of Spanish blogger Germán Martínez, who (in 2006) chose the day based on the 1977 release of Star Wars. Read more about it HERE. The 25th is also a big day for Douglas Adams fans. Towel Day was created in his honor two weeks after his death in 2001.

Related Task: using the definition of Geek as "a person who is fascinated with a certain complicated subject," tell us your favorite geeky hobby or something else that you geek out about.

Alternatively, if you don't really think of yourself as a geek, just tell us about something you like.

I like to work on things see how they work, fix them, make new things. Computers, electronics, tools, etc. Yesterday I had my PC, hairdryer and an air compressor all die somehow on me. fixed them all restored data on PC from shadow copy, removed bad splice in hairdryer, changed out the start capacitor on motor on air compressor just happened to have one in a bin that was about the right size. Lately I have all kinds of people giving me horse magazines, books, etc. even watched documentaries, etc. on some old fairly famous horses. I have a few times played a nuclear power plant simulator online as that stuff fascinates me.

Who doesn’t enjoy entering a password into a system when you know what the password is, but then you get that “invalid password” message.  So, you enter it again and get the same response.  You try a third time paying extra special care to make sure you typed it in correctly.  Same error.  You end up having to reset the password, and when prompted for the new password, you enter in the one you’ve been trying for the last ten minutes that wouldn’t work . . . only to get a message that you can’t re-use the current password.

As for astronauts, I’m going to go with Scrat.

    2. Star Wars Day / Mother's Day

    3. Stuttering Awareness Week / Mental Health Awareness Week

I work in the mental health industry, and staff are always having meetings on mental health and ways to address issues.  But one of my favorite answers comes from The Muppets, season 1 episode 14, Miss Piggy has been dragged out reluctantly to play laser tag with Kermit and his nephew Robin.  In the middle of a battle, Kermit turns to Miss Piggy and asks her if she’s having a good time.  She responds by saying “I’m an emotionally repressed individual who’s been handed a gun and told to go shoot everyone.  I’M LOVING IT!”

    4. Bee Day / Drawing Day

My first impulse was to draw a picture of Barry Gibb and see if people get it. But I’m just going to go with this Public Service Announcement:

    5. Towel Day / Geek Pride Day

I’m sure I could be called a Star Wars geek, but let’s just say I leave a Christmas tree up all year in my office at work and it is covered with Minions, Peanuts, Scooby Doo, and Star Wars characters; there’s not a single “Christmas ornament” to be found.  (There is a red devil duck hiding amongst the branches.)

  • 1. World Password Day/Astronaut Day

I think we all have the password tale of when a user is adamant that they are typing their password in wrong and yet they clearly are not. For me, I just find it humorous that we have an automated system that emails every single person who has expiring passwords, starting when it's ten days out. Then they inevitably complain that their password isn't working, we ask if they were getting the emails for resetting their password (with instructions on how to do it), and them claim they never did. It's amusing to pull up email logs that show otherwise.

    2. Star Wars Day/Mother's Day

I'll dive into the books more for Star Wars. This is also more of a joke: "A family that topples a galactic empire together stays together." In reality, I wouldn't say that anything in Star Wars models excellent parental behaviour, but at least the underlying themes of the original trilogy have some good, traditional moral values to pass along to children.

    3. Stuttering Awareness Week/Mental Health Awareness Week

As some people on the internet say, "Touch Grass." That has helped me with my outlook and mental health, although there are various other factors. But seriously, turning off the screen, or at least using it for productive use rather than spending inordinate amounts of time on YouTube or video games can do wonders.

    4. Bee Day/Drawing Day

This shall be a really short answer: I respect that insects are important for keeping the environment functioning, but that doesn't mean I like them. From a distance, I find dragonflies and butterflies quite interesting and beautiful, but if they come into my house, they've forfeited their right to existence.

    5. Towel Day/Geek Pride Day

I suppose my current geek hobby would be modding Paradox Interactive's Hearts of Iron IV. There's a large community of people who have created vast amounts of interesting alternate history scenarios (what if the Central Powers were victorious in WW1, an alternate universe of Napoleon being undefeated, etc.) as well as fantasy and science fiction total conversions (there's even a Star Wars mod set in the Clone Wars).

As I started from effectively zero knowledge, I've learned how to create entirely new GUI windows for new mechanics for the mod I'm working on with a team of other people, as well as various ways to manipulate the parameters that Paradox leaves open for modders. There's a lot of interesting ways to create fun and intricate gameplay, and I know there's still a lot more that I can learn.

    2) For all you Star Wars fans, tell us some good parenting lessons that you learned from the Star Wars franchise.
The first thing that comes to mind is when Anakin wants to participate in pod racing. Never thought about it until now, but discouraging children from doing things doesn’t always end up well and often causes resentment at best, rebellion at worst. Tamara for GoTo - I'm going to start off by saying "Wow!"

Your first 3 responses tell me you are a pretty amazing person.

    1. Christa McAuliffe - unusual choice, but I totally get it.
    2. Totally agree what an amazing mother Shmi Skywalker was.  (She was my choice, too.)
    3. Being different can be tough, especially visibly different when at school.  Well done you for turning what some would consider to be a lump of coal into a diamond.

It sounds like you're at least as impressive as Christa and Shmi.

BTW., for those that missed it, the visible difference between the male and female monarch butterfly is the dot near the middle of each of the rear wings of the male.  IIRC., it's a scent gland.  (Unfortunately those photos didn't show the difference as clearly as it often is.)
