  • Sounds like your virtual machine went missing.   Honestly never seen that under the circumstances you describe.

    Is this host and the datastore part of a cluster of hosts?  Have you checked the other member hosts for the VM?

    Could your vCenter have noticed the shutdown you did with the VM (powering it down), kicked in and started up a new instance of the VM on another host and using another datastore?   I've only got vMotion and HA in my (Essentials Plus) environment, so I'm not really sure what else could happen.    The main idea being that what looks like a missing vm is really a vmotioned - HA result.

    Given that you mention the pressure to get it back, I'd be turning to my backups to figure out what I have and do a restore to get the server back in business.
