Which OS Are You Using for Your Server? Linux or Windows?

As you probably already know, there are two top server solutions at the forefront – Microsoft Windows and Linux.  Whether you run a small, medium, or large business, having a good server operating system (OS) is essential. Now, which OS is best for you and your business? Depends...

Say, for example, you have Windows-based software like Word or Excel. Windows Server features are much more likely to be compatible with your set up... But, maybe you're after an OS that is compatible with functions like Perl, Python, or MySQL! Linux would be a top OS contender to consider.

I'm sure this has been asked about in the Community before, but with 2020 being so hectic, I'm curious if there have been any changes with OS popularity.

Which OS are you currently using? Linux or Windows? What features stood out to you when making that choice?

  • Both Windows and Linux currently.  Overall, we are morphing to "Windows where needed" only model.  Within months, the few required Windows systems will be cloud- only since CALs are a non-factor that way.

  • Free and Fast are the great things about Linux. If I had started playing with it back when editing config files was a necessity and being good at it was a badge of honor, I'd probably be mostly linux. But my command line skills aren't what they used to be, and even though you can now google up how to do damn near anything in it ... I just don't have the time or desire to get good at it. My brain has GUI-rotted I believe.

  • At work: predominantly Linux (and we are in the process of making a massive move to Red Hat OpenShift).

    At home: (a number of) Debian Linux servers and one Mac OS X one too.

  • Mostly Windows Servers but the odd Ubuntu VM if we have a specific need. Got an AppCheck box running currently but it's provided as a built VM from the vendor so don't really need to do anything with it. Hopefully no one asks me if it breaks! :)

  • This is a trick question for us. Technically our OS for our servers are Windows but all our servers are run on a hyper-converged appliance that runs on Linux.

  • We have 3 physical hosts that are running VMWare and we have 2 virtual servers that are running Linux, but those are specialty appliances and not something I maintain other than updating the appliance using their pre-packaged updates.  All of our other 25+ Windows Servers are either 2012 R2 or 2016 Servers in our Datacenter.  I love Linux and spent many years working in the AIX, Unix and Linux world but now it pretty much all Windows for me.

  • Both Windows and Linux for us. Windows are all desktops and Business Servers. We are using Linux for the Robots on the Production Floor as well as the Robotic conveyor and "un-stacker" (Un-Stacker for the lack of a better word) and the smaller servers that are in the PLC's.

  • We have a mix of HyperV and Scale Computing (Linux) clusters, but Windows VMs hosted on them either way.
