  • There's going to be some additional questions to really build a legal hold policy.
    Depending on the email system and file share system you use, many of them have legal hold functions built in now (e.g. Office 365). In the O365 case, there is button under each user profile that is a simple "one-click" to start a legal hold. In that case, O365 will just prevent data from being deleted for that user until the legal hold is lifted (you need to manually lift the legal hold).
    As far as how long, usually once an attorney provides you with a request for legal hold, they will be the ones to stipulate how long to keep the hold in place (and how far back to pull archives if available).
