  • I'm not sure I like this. J2 Global is a good company but having you, Jay, at the top of Spiceworks has made this platform the best there is for IT Pros. Hopefully with the ownership change you will continue to be at the helm.

But overall, I trust you and am excited to see the journey continue forward!

  • Well congratulations. All the hard work you put in definitely shows on the bottom line. The only questions we have are...where do we go from here? I can only assume that this means that since this looks like a corporate purchase...they will start looking at things that are not profit producing and slimming down? I hope that Spicecorps, Spiceworld, etc and more do not get affected and we keep on the path of Holy IT Matrimony that we all have come to love from you guys!

  • My biggest concern is that I don't see anything is your statement regarding continuity of the apps. Your focus is on a marketplace; hope there's a little bit of attention given to the HelpDesk.

    I am filled with foreboding...

"We’ll do so by marrying our greatest assets – the Spiceworks Community, our suite of products, Ziff Davis’ properties, and our combined expertise in helping technology brands find their next customer. You'll get the insights you need to help you run your business and make smarter purchase decisions. Technology brands will gain the intelligence they need to build and sell better products. And we’ll directly connect you so you can grow your businesses together."

I understand and appreciate that Spiceworks has always made their revenue from vendor relationships, but the above makes it sounds like ZD just bought a mailing list. I sincerely hope that I am wrong in my interpretation.  Like Gaspode said - Bode, bode, bode...

  • Congratulations on building up Spiceworks so much that Ziff Davis has an interest to acquire it. There's certainly a lot of potential gains in being under a parent company that has so many other resources.

That said, I do hope Ziff Davis will be smart and take a fairly "hands-off" approach and let the folks at Spiceworks continue to work their spicy magic :-). I'd hate to see it go the other way like how we in the IT world too often see when one company buys up another for their product and somehow proceed to take that good product and practically run it into the ground (kinda like HP did with 3Com's product line).

Agreed, although I saw this coming and they are a IT marketing company and have long delayed the onprem helpdesk/inventory app.

To Jay, I have trusted Spiceworks until proven otherwise but based on a few months back post where Spiceworks would not stop to be the same and then this, the rumors were true and that makes some doubts. That said I hope all the downsizing doesn’t affect that many of the staff which already are happening.

  • I have mixed feelings about this.

My main concern is who will "go"?  I can't think of one person that I have interacted with at Spiceworks that doesn't add to the fabric of the brand.

I have long since given up on the app(s), When Spiceworks 8 was announced it sounded promising, that never happened, then it became something else based on the cloud code, which I did BETA, but it's been that for over a year and almost 2 years with no movement in any app, not a lot from what I see in the cloud side of things either.

The community has been fading, all the good people are not posting as often and those new that do, ask some obscure questions for people who work in IT.

I will watch from the side line, but fading away quietly is still my aim here, very little makes me want to stay anymore.

Let's hope this is for a good reason.

  • No more procrastinating on finding a new Help Desk to run our business...time to move on.  Nothing in that statement (and the lack of any new releases for FOREVER) says that they will support that particular product/application.  Time to fork over some $$$$ and work with a new Help Desk product.  It's a shame though, I liked it a lot...not just because it was free (w/ads).

Agree with this. But the writing has been on the wall for a while now. From Slow releases for on-prem to no updates since March of last year. We moved off of Spiceworks Help Desk a few months ago, and rarely visit the SW community anymore because of it. Unfortunately, this will probably be the norm for me as the SW help desk linked me to the community.  To be quite blunt, the SW community has slowed down a bit IMO and there are other IT Pro communities that are actually quite more active.
Congrats on the sale, but don't forget what made the SW successful.

  • I'm hoping there won't be a paywall or irrelevant ads (did you see what this celeb did to her ex??) in your face and autoloading videos like the rest of ZD. This community is a breather from all of that distraction.

  • Not liking the idea that a big conglomerate like ZD is interested in, or going to keep my interests in mind. With them owning Spiceworks, there will be so much more tracking to figure where we go, what we look at, etc.... even after we have left the page, all for their benefit. Also, don't forget about all the promotion of all their other properties. Now we will be just another commodity...

It remains to be seen, but you don't decide to buy something unless there is a way to leverage it for something beneficial to you...

I moved my shop to Lansweeper this Spring, reasonably priced and well supported.
