  • I would go with what they are already using for a personal phone...the least amount of change for a non-technical user is usually the best choice.

  • Depends on what provider but I've been the most happy with my Google Pixel 3.  After using a few Samsung devices in the past, I like the stock Google experience.  Not as much flash as Samsung packs in but it's quick and efficient.  If you want more flash, go with a Samsung S10

    For the record - I support and have used all manner of smartphones. Over the years my personal phone has been a PalmPilot/Treo, Blackberry, Android, then iPhone (each I've had for a couple of years). I've found advantages and disadvantages to all.

     In general, I'd say the iPhone is the easiest and most popular among the C-level set. He'll "fit in" socially with an iPhone, and be more 'compatible' with other executives.

  • I don't like supporting Apple products so I would go with Android. They're straight forward and easy to use. I've had enough iPhone users ask how to find settings on their phones to know that someone who isn't tech savvy may have a tough time transitioning. That's just my experience though.

  • Depends on what he wants to use it for honestly.  Do you have a test device on hand for him to get familiar with before making the purchase to the latest and greatest?  Is he looking to do more mobility or being out in the field?

    Since he is coming from a flip phone... i would say his primary goal is phone calls and emails.

  • I use Android, but for a non smart phone user, iPhones are easier to learn.

    From an IT perspective, we started out giving staff a choice of iPhone or Android, and after two years we have moved all but a few to iPhones.  easier for us to maintain.

    I used to have a flip phone, a Razor. Damn nice phone. Way more durable than my Galaxy S7 (which I love). I have also had an iPhone 5C, which I hated.

  • It really depends on what the phone will be used for. If it's for business purposes rather than personal, I tend to prefer iPhones. And since you mention he's a flip-phone holdover, that is also a mark in favor of the iPhone. Androids aren't quite as user friendly.

  • Hmmm, he said that his boss wasn't too savvy with mobile tech.  I personally believe that iPhone is easier to use than Android.  (not saying its better).  In this case, I would vote on iPhone.

    Then consider getting the boss another flip phone and an LTE laptop for data. They will understand how to use the phone and the a connected laptop will let them bring their desktop environment with them on the road for email and everything else. Easiest solution for all involved, assuming you have a good VPN solution.

    The boss has resisted, or successfully avoided getting a smartphone this long, what's a few more years? If they are insisting on a smartphone then they probably do have an opinion on which they want. in which case, get that.

  • iPhones are easier to use IMO. Easier to get to the settings. Easier to explain to users. Not so much with the different flavors of Android.

  • Never touch an Apple Device in a business environment.

    Apples are personal devices only.

    Retire all company owned Apple Devices once they hit end of warranty, and replace only from now on with Android phones.

    We are resolute on this - we simply do not deal with Apple any longer.  We keep the existing ones going as best we can, once they are done, they are done.

    I am agreeing with the current majority that iPhone is usually better for the less tech savvy people. I wouldn't worry too much about the account setup. Just set up the account with his work email, so that the password can be reset if he ever forgets it.

  • Just wait until he forgets his Apple password and then bring the device back to you to get it unlocked - or calls from home on the weekend as he is trying to install an app for his Son and can't remember his apple password.

    Android will be much easier to user and support - we are no longer issuing any company owned iphones. And management had no issue backing us up on this.

  • I think whatever setup you decide on will be a whole new learning experience.

    Given that I'd be focusing more on features start with battery life then maybe storage.

  • I have the Pixel 3 and the call screen feature through Google Assisant is pretty much the greatest thing ever. 

    We have a mix of Apple and Android, I can support them both so really doesn't matter much to me.

  • If it's a boss coming from a flip phone, iPhone. If they're a little more tech savvy, Android. Note that I'm note implying that Androids are too complicated for anyone, but iPhones seem (to me) to be just the basic smartphone out of the box.

    Or, if they don't need a smart phone but just a replacement, check out the new Nokia 3310. Modern day re-imagining of the classic Nokia bar style.

    Apple have a comprehensive service for business users that works very well for both deployment and device management, these go hand in hand with the carrier and couldnt be simpler to manage. We have a fleet of over 60 dual sim iPhones and 20 iPads out to staff and it's an area of support I never need to think about. Reassigning, replacing, retiring old stock is a doddle and the bonus is that the ecosystem is uniform across all devices, and everyone knows how to use them with little to no input from us.

    I couldn't think of a bigger nightmare than having to switch users from a familiar platform to a different one and then have the increased support load from having to help users with the myriad of Android foibles in a business setting. Android is a perfectly good platform for business providing that you approach it with a plan and a uniform perspective but retiring a common platform and migrating would have to be done en-masse to achieve consistency and compatibility across the workforce. Android is great but Apple's iOS is much harder for the users to screw up, easier for them to use and a damn sight easier to support.

    We have had users that ask us to supply them with Android phones instead as that is what they are used to but these requests are always denied. I appreciate that people know what they know but the reason we supply Apple iPhones is exactly because of the simplicity that comes with managing these devices. It is a cost benefit to the organisation rather than a personal choice for them. We ain't Carphone Warehouse :)

    The one thing I've noticed about SW is that there is a few militant anti-Apple hardliners who let their prejudices cloud decision making. It's about the right tool for the job not the logo thats on the device. If Android works for you then great, but your comment is less advice and more a directive "Apple are awful, you must never touch them and if you have them get rid" with no basis in fact on which to back this directive up.

  • What are the chances that you'll be cleaning up a security breach? On Android is almost certain. Apple has done much better on that front.

    I wouldn't use Android if you paid me to. Its a bad imitation and way too tied to Google. And yes you can use an iPhone without an AppleID, although a lot of features are cloud-centric. But again, remember the privacy and security differences. Apple makes money selling hardware. Google makes money selling personal information.

  • I think for ease and simplicity an iPhone would be the way to go, transition from a flip phone to an iPhone should not be so painful.

    Samsung for personal.

    I have the iPhone as my work phone and find it better quality and many ways for this. But I use my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active for home because I have way more freedom on a Samsung.

  • I hear this question a lot but at the end ill tell you what i tell everyone. It is up to preference. Ive always felt that an Android has more freedom and potential but it is not as user friendly to a beginner. An iphone is more user friendly and less compatible but it essentially provides a good user experience without having to know too much.

    if going the iPhone route Defiantly use a Work Email address so you can get it reset/unlocked if you need to . . .

  • So yeeeaaaahhh as someone from before the Flip phone generation, I bite my tongue at the variety of replies I feel boiling up inside me and just say "Android" its stable, it works hand in glove with Google and you dont need a ridiculous apple account to get your apps and updates. Do a lot of people have Apple accounts already, sure, but I'd argue more already have google accounts (the 60 year old machinist in our factory has a google account) and I just find Apple annoying. I saw in the apple pool for several years before returning to the android lagoon and for myself and all my users I just find it easier, cheaper and more fully featured. Biggest point, try to run Teamviewer host on an Apple and then run it on an Android and ask yourself, do you want to walk a user through a problematic configuration change or just do it yourself by taking over their device?

  • For a less tech savvy person, I would recommend an iPhone. It is 95% ready to use as soon as you take it out of the box. Make sure that you document the information that is used to setup the Apple ID.

  • I will go against the rest.  DON'T give the Boss what he wants just because he wants it.  You have to follow your stated industries guidelines for auditing purposes, FOIL issues, privacy regulations.  Make that abundantly clear to the boss.  That even if he wants to use his/her personal phone it will then become eligible for FOIL and company scrutiny.  Make sure the boss is aware of all things security and compliance that come with the phone.

    Used to be an Android user but I got sick of the app that comes with AD's. So I moved to iPhone but now I am missing Android. 

    I can upload photos, documents and what ever I want in to the Android phone. Can create sub folders, Inbuilt hidden folder and you can Download most of the videos just by long press on the screen (Don't know if all Androids do that but my Samsung galaxy s8 plus does).

    I don't have any of these with iPhone.

    Well, there is  a reason iOS is generally considered to be more secure that Android, but if you want/need that type of enhanced functionality, there is always jailbreak/Cydia for the iPhone. Lot of messing around though. I got tired of it around iPhone 6, just keep it plain vanilla since then...

    Lets look at a few bits and which wins...

    Cost droid starts at about £70, iPhones start at about 4x that price, Droid.

    The ability to limit cellular data use if tight on data plan, Droid

    The first and so far best implemented activation lock to prevent theft, Apple.

    The easiest to break the activation lock after proving you own and have the phone in question, Apple.

    The easiest to use, the phone that 'just works', Apple.

    The OS with the fewest viruses and assorted malware in the store, despite Googles attempts to resolve, Apple.

    The easiest to apply meaningful MDM without the users being able to circumvent, Apple.

    As its a manager involved, brand caché, Apple.

    Support with iPhone is generally better than with any of the Droids (my experiences with Samsung and Lenovo (Motorola) in particular were... poor)

    This not true, you can MDM iOS devices easily. From the the fact that 'boss' comes from a flip-phone, I don't think MDM is relevant anyway ....

    And, fwiw, where I live (UK), business uses of iOS is pretty mainstream.

    The most nonsensical oversimplified response to this question yet. Nowhere in the world is Android synonymous with PC users. Nor is iPhone synonymous with Mac users. If it were then I'd imagine the marketshare of Mac's to be a lot bigger. Unless of course you were being sarcastic in which case it was subtle enough for me to miss.
