  • What are they going to be using for software? I personally prefer that engineering and design people get a desktop and not a mobile. Also, depending on the software, verify that the graphics card is tested and know to be compatible.

  • What engineering software are you running? AutoCAD and Revit both want faster cores, not more cores, for best performance. Those desktop Xeons are going to crawl compared to a fast i7, for example.

Also, RAID0 with SATA SSD's is still going to be way slower than NVMe SSD's in single stick configurations.

  • They are using SolidWorks, SolidView Pro and DraftSight.

The reason we're going with Mobile workstations for 3 of these guys is that they travel often between sites and to and from customer locations and they need to be mobile.  Trust me, if it weren't for that, I'd be fitting them with Desktops.

  • Windows 10 Workstation requires Xeon Processors

  • We have been using the P70 for our CAD guys and they are pretty happy with them. They currently run with Xeon E3-1575M v5 3GHz 32 GB RAM and SSD drives for SYS. They run AutoCAD 2018, Revit, Bluebeam and a few other software.

  • The box we run SolidWorks Flow on is a dual-Xeon but they are quad cores with the fastest clock speed we could get. It also has 128GB of RAM. We optimized it for AutoDesk CFD, but it runs Flow very well, even though it is old now.

I'd certainly consider more RAM, as well. I guess I don't understand using Windows Workstation when you aren't close to the socket count or RAM limit of Windows Pro. Slow Xeon's aren't going to do you any favors. Fast Xeon's are VERY expensive, Intel is jerking us all around but what can you do?

  • We use Solidworks and I buy our engineering laptops and desktops from Solid box. Mainly for the service provided. However they are a great resource at specking them also if you want to get your own elsewhere. Here is there laptop links. They specialize in Mastercam, Solidworks, and Autocad.
