  • If you know what you are doing.....

Else get a large SSD (2TB)

  • "Fusion Drive" is just a fancy marketing term for a hybrid drive, a spinning disk with a small SSD on board that essentially acts as a very large non-volatile cache for the spinning drive.  Hybrid drives very rarely come close to having the performance that a dedicated SSD would have.  So really all you end up with is a more expensive spinning disk that seems pretty fast, but not nearly as fast as an SSD.  Like all hybrid things in life, like a car, the designer is trying to take the advantages of different technologies and meld them together into one thing, hoping that the disadvantages of said technologies magically go away, that usually ends up being nothing but mediocre versions of the included technologies.

In short, go with the SSD + Spinning Disk.

  • Thanks guys.  I ended up going with a fusion drive for the challenge mainly, but from what I read, it looks like Apple's core storage that sits in between the two drives in theory has a pretty good control over the data that flows back and forth.  You're right, with all things set aside, hybrid is just a mediocre result of just dedicating one way or the other.  I only bought a 500GB SSD and a 1TB WD Black.

at first I installed High Sierra to the SSD to see what the results were and it was pretty good. I then loaded the boot installer and configured the fusion drive using the terminal app and recovered my time machine backup. I noticed a significant different on the positive side after loading my backup.  Mac sees one 1.5 TB drive and all of my apps are happy. Photoshop and other apps load much faster and operate smoother. I think my overall goal was accomplished and that was to virtually eliminate the bouncing beach ball. Mission Accomplished!
