Have several clients with environmental impacts to their WIFI performance. After reading about UNIFI WAPS here on Spiceworks, I purchased a single WAP to go through the configuration.
Amazon had the Unifi AP 802.11N for approx $65 US. So I decided to "bite the bullet".
Everything you need hardware wise comes in the box, except network cables. The POE injector is clearly labeled for what cable goes where.
You have to create an account with UBIQUITI Networks and download the (Free) controller software.
The WAP defaults to 192.168.1.20. This was an issue as it was not in my address space. The menus lead to believe I could change it to my address space however the changes were not taking. Additionally, I could not "Adopt" the WAP to my controller software installation. Tried moving my network to 192.168.1.x temporarily but had not luck with the WAP configuration changes or the "Adoption Process"
Ended up moving the WAP to a new router in the 192.168.1x address range. Within minutes the WAP was adopted.
The controller software has a ton of features over residential WIFI routers. Changing antenna power allows for nice balance of coverage to security from over extending.
Still working on all the features of the WAP. Plan to add a Security Gateway and Cloud Key in the near future.
This is an ongoing project.
