My Choice Software
I've never had this problem buying a software license from a REPUTABLE company.
Nov 15, 2020 at 11:41 UTC
First reply from MCS - they want me to do a phone activation.
We all know where that is going. If I ever have to reinstall, their warranty has run out and I get the shaft.
I told them, a new license that works on Internet activation, or my money back.
Office 2013 Home & Bus.
Two keys. One comes back as invalid via the manual activation method, one comes back that it has been activated to many times using the internet method.
New keys from Microsoft do not have these errors - they would not have been activated before. After a key is found to be pirated, Microsoft will deactivate it.
Spencer says its beyond your "30 day support period" for help with activation - I know this is just double speak to get around the issue.
I don't need support, I just need two good keys that were paid for. He knows which customer this is about.
Jul 13, 2018 at 00:44 UTC
Same issue here. Bought Office 2011 for MAC with 3 seat lic in Dec 2016. Never had need to activate until JulY 2018 and the lic key is invalid. Contacted MyChoice and initially got canned responses but I persisted. Now I am being ignored completely. Jake F from MyChoice alleges today that this purchase is more than 2 yrs old and MyChoice is unable to provide support. Do the maths Jake! And I did not ask for support, just a valid lic key! Multiple reports of same issue all over internet. It is reported that the sequence of events are (credit to Matthew J G):
Less than 1 year: Oops, here is a replacement/upgrade, make sure to register with just the phone method.
Replaced once: Sorry, out of luck
More than 1 year: Sorry out of luck.
Stay away from this company unless you have money to burn - not legit and not interested in your problems once they have your money.
Data protection can be more difficult if WE are the biggest danger to our own data.
Data protection is on the minds of many business owners and IT personnel lately with the recent ransomware and cyber attacks happening all over the place. Many companies are switching over to cloud services to store their data on much more secure servers than their own on-premises machines can provide. Users of Office 365 use Microsoft’s own hardened servers to protect their sensitive data, allowing admins to focus on managing applications rather than the day-to-day tasks. While cloud storage on OneDrive is very secure from external threats, sometimes the worst threat to your data can be carelessness from your own organization.
While there is always a chance for hackers to get into your account, that typically is a result of poor security on a physical terminal where the access to the cloud account is available. The real culprit for a majority of data loss in the cloud stems from users accidentally deleting or overwriting files in addition to files being overwritten by another application. The problem is that while software-as-a-service (SaaS) cloud providers backup data on their servers, they don't typically safeguard against accidental data loss. Accidental deletions are unpredictable and typically aren’t malicious in nature, so it is hard to safeguard against user error who has authorized access in the first place.
Protecting Your Data
However, you do not have to systematically walk on eggshells when dealing with sensitive data within your own account. There are many steps you can take today to lessen the chances of losing data due to mistakes by your users. Microsoft has their own set of data loss prevention policies, but here are some great ways to keep your data intact when using Office 365 OneDrive storage:
Use a 3rd-Party Backup – Backup your data locally or onto another cloud storage separate from OneDrive. Having additional copies of your data in case the original gets lost or corrupted can only help you should you not be able to recover your data.
Avoid Storing Sensitive Information – Avoid storing very sensitive data like credit card information or passwords on the cloud. If proper precautions aren’t taken, it can lead to potential data leakage.
Use Cloud Providers That Offer Encryption – Encryption provides double security since your files will have to be decrypted to gain access. It protects your data from service providers or other snooping entities that do not have authorization.
Use Security Software – If your computer isn’t sufficiently protected, hackers can easily gain access to your cloud account remotely. Make sure that your machine is shielded from spyware, ransomware, and other malicious attempts at getting access to your device.
Create a Stronger Password – Using passwords that are too easy to guess by outside attackers or other users can have bad consequences. Avoid making passwords that relate to you personally or relate to something others associate with you. For example, if you have a spouse or child, do not use their names as your password. Create passwords that are more randomized to minimize your risk.

Microsoft Garage has developed Dictate, its own speech-to-text tool that integrates directly with apps in Microsoft Office.
Dictate is the newest project to come out of Microsoft Garage, the Redmond giant’s experimental R&D department. This new tool will be available as an add-in for Microsoft Office for Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The new Dictation tab will allow users to utilize Cortana’s speech recognition system in conjunction with Microsoft Translator to provide a state-of-the-art experience for Office.
There is compelling evidence that we all speak faster than we type in general. By speaking directly to your document, you can increase your productivity and give your poor fingers a rest. Additionally while using the speech-to-text feature, you do not need to necessarily be right next to your computer as your “type;” simply speaking aloud and clearly will allow Cortana to put your words to screen almost as fast as you can speak them with Cortana’s highly accurate speech recognition system.
While Dictate isn’t the only application to venture into speech-to-text territory (think Nuance) for Microsoft Office, it is the first to integrate Cortana into the mix. Since Dictate is built directly into the Office apps, there is no worry of compatibility or lag. Besides being built directly into Office, Dictate also has some nice tricks up its sleeve:
- Users can manipulate the behavior of the cursor by using keyword commands such as the following:
- New Line - drops the cursor down to a new line
- Delete - removes the last line you dictated
- Stop Dictation - turns off the Dictation tool
- Period - adds a [.]
- Question mark - adds a [?]
- Open Quote - adds a [“]
- Close Quote - adds a [”]
- Colon - adds a [:]
- Comma - adds a [,]
- New Line - drops the cursor down to a new line
- 29 languages are available for speech-to-text
- Real-time translation for 60 languages
- Punctuation can be added in manually or through Dictation
- Users can speak in one language through Dictation and the program can type in another language; for example, speak English and type in Spanish
Dictate is available for download as an add-in for Microsoft Office on Windows. Check out a video of Dictate by Microsoft on our original blog here: https://www.mychoicesoftware.com/blogs/news/dictate-by-microsoft-lets-you-type-with-your-voice

Microsoft announces that protection from ransomware like the recent “WannaCrypt” attacks will be part of the long-awaited Windows 10 Creators Update.
In a recent article Opens a new windowfrom Microsoft, the subject of combating ransomware like the recent attacks around the world takes center stage as a premier addition to the Windows 10 Creators UpdateOpens a new window. Microsoft seems to be doubling down on its own antivirus software as well as hardware solutions to deal with the debilitating attacks like WannaCrypt. The Windows strategy of dealing with these attacks include:
- Utilizing hardware-based security (built into Windows 10) and use mitigations to increase risk to attackers on Windows 10
- Windows 10 will block virtually all pathways for hackers to use for attack through Windows Defender Antivirus and Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection
Windows 10 Defeats Ransomware
Microsoft praises its own internal efforts for its effectiveness towards repelling the recent ransomware attacks. The software manufacturer also stated that no one using the new Windows 10 S reported any successful ransomware attacks against their computers, nor were any Windows 10 users affected by the WannaCrypt attacks.
It is now known that cyberattack was most effective against older and more obsolete operating systems, which is why Microsoft is stressing the effectiveness of its newest Windows platform that receives constant updates from staying ahead of threats before they strike. For example, Microsoft Edge, the new search engine built for Windows 10, uses tools like Kernel Control Flow Guard (kCFG) and Arbitrary Code Guard (ACG) to seek out and mitigate threats.
Windows Defender Antivirus uses the cloud and AI with the Microsoft Intelligent Security Graph to identify new threats (including ransomware) as they first appear anywhere in the world to quickly find a means of protecting users. The upcoming Creators Update will beef up the capabilities of Windows Defender Antivirus and Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection to make this real-time protection a better reality.

Moving away from a centralized network to a cloud-based system is the key to successfully adopting Office 365 for your enterprise.
Many enterprise-level businesses are moving towards Office 365 in record numbers (there will be an estimated 100 million users by the end of 2017) for the features it offers, but some are facing challenges when converting over. Many of these businesses either have or are trying to implement changes to their existing centralized networks to prepare for the power necessary to convert to Office 365, but have been met with problems regarding bandwidth, firewall security, and more. The true issue is not Office 365 itself, but rather the fact that many of these businesses are deploying the software suite using old conventions instead of new direct-to-Internet solutions.
Office 365 Deployment: Challenges and Opportunities
Zscaler, a prominent cloud security firm, conducted an Office 365 deployment survey of over 200 enterprise-class Office 365 accounts in partnership with TechValidate. Together, the two companies sought to find out what is happening when these businesses bring Office 365 into play. Zscaler recently published this report, polling senior IT managers, directors, and C-level executives from medium to large enterprises in North America. The purpose of this survey was to see how these various companies prepared their own corporate networks for the switch to Office 365 and what came of their deployment journeys.
Before Office 365 was deployed for these 206 accounts, 64 percent of participants in the survey expressed concerns that their current systems would have substantial bandwidth and latency issues. Additionally, 69 percent of participants were expecting to see their bandwidth increase by 50 percent while 48 percent of participants were expecting an increase of 75 percent or more.
Overall, more than half of mid-level and C-level participants listed the cost of deploying Office 365 on their current systems as a primary concern; latency was also considered a top concern for almost three-quarters of C-level executives. While the estimated cost of upgrading IT, security, and network infrastructure were initially high, about half of the participants reported even higher costs incurred than original estimates.
Most of the participants admitted to only trying to upgrade their existing networks over utilizing cloud capabilities, possibly as an attempt to keep all operations centralized within each company’s network. 58 percent increased their bandwidth while 65 percent upgraded their firewalls, which accounts for many of the high costs mentioned above.
Unfortunately, only upgrading firewalls or bandwidth proved to be an ineffective method for adopting Office 365. Despite upgrades, 69 percent of participants experienced firewall latency issues and weekly bandwidth issues while 30 percent had daily bandwidth issues.
A key difference between using centralized networks and cloud-based direct Internet access is the connection time. Since Office 365 keeps files up-to-date and current across many devices and users all the time, it can keep anywhere from 12 to 20 times more connections open, it’s understandable that companies would want to increase both bandwidth and security. However, most centralized networks simply are not built to withstand such a load of constant information exchange, thereby causing 33 percent of participants to experience daily latency issues and 70 percent to have weekly latency issues.
A Cloud-Based Solution
However, only 33 percent of the 206 decided to take a step away from centralized networks and enabled direct Internet access from branch offices. A cloud-based solution seems to be the most viable as 70 percent of participants decided to go for direct-to-Internet connections from branch offices to combat the traffic and latency issues of using a traditional hub-and-spoke network system.
Try using these cloud-based solutions to properly scale your network to smoothly accept the increased Office 365 traffic:
- Deploy local breakout to ensure fast pathways (*Be aware that this method can be costly in admin overhead and needs additional appliances at all branch offices)
- Use a cloud-based firewall that is scalable to your needs
- Utilize advanced bandwidth management controls for prioritizing Office 365 traffic
- Maintain full security controls to protect your system and your branches in addition to staying on top of frequent security updates

Day 2 of Microsoft Build 2017 departed from purely technical products for a more conceptual approach to appeal to the “creators” in the audience.
Microsoft has kept artists, designers, architects, and more in mind in the creative-centric direction Microsoft is taking Windows, which in turn has birthed the next Creators Update coming this fall for Windows 10.
The Microsoft Build 2017 presentation decisively focused on the people themselves who can utilize the powerful tools of Windows 10 in tandem with Microsoft’s line of Surface products to effectively marry art and technology together cohesively. The three main pillars of the Microsoft Build 2017 Day 2 presentation included the following:
- “Love and engagement” across devices as part of the new Windows 10 Fall Creators Update to grant developers new capabilities for app and project development
- Continuous delivery from the Windows Store and improvement to Microsoft Visual Studio
- Amazing tools for developers in Visual Studio for creating apps for any platform
Windows Story Remix
This new application provides users with more dynamic ways of sharing photos and creating videos. The program’s AI finds your best moments from all your uploaded photos and videos to create a “story” made up of only the best shots and angles. Windows Story Remix is programmed to search for action, faces, people, objects, and important focal points within your content to use the most optimal images (in addition to music) for your story. You can also filter your story to concentrate on a specific person, or “star,” and Story Remix will perform a new search for optimal images or footage of that person for a more specialized video. The Story Editor allows you to customize your video even further by giving you a variety of tools, effects, 3D, mixed reality, and the ability to rearrange your footage to fit your taste.
Microsoft Fluent Design System
This new design system has been crafted by Microsoft work with new design elements as well as the ability to be manipulated by mouse, touch, or stylus. Microsoft Fluent Design concentrates on multiple factors to deliver captivating visuals that blend traditional 2D imaging with 3D and mixed reality; these factors include the following:
A special emphasis is also being placed on the use of the stylus pen and Windows Ink to enhance visuals in new and exciting ways. Regarding search and navigation within search engines, the pen can handwrite keywords into the search box, select links, copy and paste, and scroll along the edge of the page. Users will also be able to add writing and notations within PDF documents as well for better understanding.
Windows & Microsoft Graph
Microsoft Graph is a radical new idea that claims “Microsoft will love all of your devices,” even stretching across hardware lines such as Apple and Android products to grant anyone using any device the same wonderful experience with Windows programs. The new mantra is “all your files, activities, content…across multiple devices.”
OneDrive Files on Demand
Users will be able to upload files to the OneDrive cloud system and be able to access them from any device that has OneDrive installed. Additionally, files will be able to be “pinned” to specific locations such as device hard drive or the OneDrive cloud if the user desires to ensure he or she always has access to those files on a specific device. If a file is saved to a user’s desktop on one device, it can be displayed as available to be opened across all devices that are synced to the user’s OneDrive account.
By selecting the Task Switcher button, the user’s current applications that are open are displayed at the top. Below the open apps is a chronological list of applications and activities the user has engaged in each day going backward in time as you scroll down the page. Each activity is also labeled with the activity name as well as an intuitive card that illustrates the activity visually. Activities can be searched by using the Search button, and you will be taken to where you left off before you closed the activity by selecting it. Your Timeline can be accessed from any of your cloud-connected devices, prompting you to open a file you were previously working on with your desktop for example and access again from your tablet.
This feature allows users to copy and paste text and images across devices through the intuitive Swiftkey Keyboard. For example, you can copy some text from a document on your laptop, and then switch to your mobile phone. When accessing your Internet search browser on your phone, select the Swiftkey Keyboard function on the phone’s on-screen keyboard. A list of recently copied material will appear in a list, and you can simply select the text you had previously copied and apply it to the search box. This function is great for moving content from one device to another quickly.
New apps that will be available in the Windows Store as of Microsoft Build 2017:
- SAP Digital Boardroom
- Autodesk SketchBook
- Autodesk Stingray for mixed reality
- SUSE Linux
- Xamarin Live Player (for iOS app development)
- Narrator Developer Mode
- Windows Mixed Reality

Many Microsoft Windows and Office products will be losing support in 2017, so is it time for you to upgrade to the newest software?
Microsoft supports its products for long periods of time, but eventually, they finally do end all support for their older product lines. This lack of support can prove troublesome for people who are slow to adopt newer software products as their older software can quickly pass out of relevance once all support ceases. In 2017, Microsoft will be ending support (or already has ended) for many of its Windows and Office products. Depending on what you have on your machine, will you be left in the dust?
When support does finally end for all the slated products by October 2017, older Microsoft product users will face a few challenges:
No More Updates - Once the extended support period ends, Microsoft will no longer send out patches and updates to keep the older versions of software maintained
Security Risks - With no new security updates, older software will be subject to being hacked or being infected with malware or malicious viruses
Obsolete Formats - If you want to send or receive files with others, you will not be able to read newer formats, nor will other be able to read your older formatting
Compatibility Issues - You will not be able to use newer software or application types
To give you an idea of what will be losing support in 2017, take a look below:
Products no longer supported in 2017:
- Windows Vista - final security update was April 11, 2017
- Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 - support ended January 10, 2017
Product support ending October 10, 2017:
- Microsoft Office 2007
- Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1
- Microsoft Office for Mac 2011
- Microsoft Word for Mac 2011
- Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011
- Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac 2011
- Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011
- 2007 Microsoft Office Servers
- Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0
- Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0
- Microsoft Office Project 2007
- Microsoft Office Project Server 2007
- Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server 2007
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007
- Microsoft Office Visio 2007
- Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007
Additionally, extended support for Windows 7 runs out January 14, 2020. Mainstream support will also be ending for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 January 9, 2018
Did you see software you are currently using on the list? If so, it may be time to consider an upgrade to more modern pastures. Windows 10 and Office 2016 offer the latest in features and capabilities from Microsoft, but if you truly want to never have to worry about losing support for your software, trading in perpetual software licenses for a pay-as-you-go option such as Office 365 is your best bet.

Day 1 of the Microsoft Build 2017 Conference revolved around pushing the envelope for cloud apps and technology through corporate level solutions, workplace safety, Cortana functionality, and new functions for Microsoft Azure.
The annual Microsoft Build 2017 conference took place this past week, revealing many new updates and features they hope will not only launch the Washington-based company beyond superstardom among the software development industry but also become the shining example of what is possible with personal computing and multimedia devices we use every day.
Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel in an already overly-saturated industry of technology, Microsoft has decided to take a much more holistic approach to software and hardware development. For example, instead of pursuing their own path in mobile (at least for the time being), Microsoft will be concentrating its efforts on developing apps and software that is compatible across ALL devices, which includes Apple and Android products as well.
The executives that spoke during the Microsft Build 2017 conference believe that the reality of the ecosystem is that people are going to use different devices for different lifestyles, and so the most sensible approach is one that strives to put Microsoft on every device in a person’s arsenal rather than restricting to Windows-only products.
On Day 1, CEO Satya Nadella and other executives focused on utilizing the Intelligent Cloud and the Intelligent Edge concepts to take Microsoft computing technology to new heights. The conference covered many new things coming for the software giant and lasted for three days. Below is a brief recap of the highlights of each day that will impact Windows and non-Windows users alike by the end of the year:
Cloud Apps for Industry
Azure Cloud IoT apps can be used as an automated solution to help monitor machinery and make AI decisions about maintenance or even emergency shutdown to avoid costly accidents. Swedish manufacturer Sandvik Coromant developed an application to track the maintenance of some of their large industrial equipment as part of the Microsoft Build 2017 presention.
In the wake of this industrial use of Azure cloud services, Microsoft unveiled Azure IoT Edge, a cross-platform runtime that enables cloud functionality to be exported, run, and managed directly from IoT devices remotely; this new system is compatible with both Windows and Linux systems.
Workplace Safety with AI
Using sophisticated commodity cameras and Azure cloud technology, Microsoft can implement an advanced tracking system that can identify people, objects, actions, and workplace hazards in real time. The system notifies the right personnel via their smartphones of safety alerts, the needs of other employees, employees through facial recognition, and the location of important objects such as tools and safety equipment. Through this system, Microsoft predicts that it can effectively eliminate most if not all workplace accidents through data gathering and prevention.
Cortana, Teams Meetings, and the Microsoft Graph
Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, can be programmed with developed skills to interact with Microsoft’s other systems such as setting schedules, notifying you of important upcoming events, and even giving you traffic conditions on the way to your important meeting. If you are running late, Cortana can connect you via Teams to your colleagues so you can still contribute remotely (if your vehicle has smart technology compatible with Cortana). All your data can be sent to any of your connected devices so you are always up-to-date in the office, at home, or on the go.
Teams Meetings is also all-new with additional features that allow team members to bring data sheets, graphs, and other useful information on their screens as well as view team member profiles in real time to help with assigning tasks. Once the meeting has concluded, a summary of the important meeting information can be packaged into an email including videos, documents, images, and more.
Stay tuned for part 2 of the Microsoft Build 2017 Day 1 recap, featuring all-new developments for Microsft Azure.
