Replacement of CISCO RV345 router

Hello, I am a department of 1 and work for a manufacturing company with 50 employees. Our primary attack surface is via eMail, which is hosted offsite someplace in ATT cyberspace using the @sbcglobal.net domain. I have been hired to get NIST SP800-171 compliant and then pass a CMMC audit at level 3 successfully.

Here is the list of what has been done:

  • Network Installation: abandoned the CAT5e "BUS" topology network and replace
  • Network Design: determined the number of ethernet drops needed and cable lengths for a network design of star topology.
  • Network Category 8 cables, connectors, and distribution panel selected based on cable length and took into account interference from a number of industrial 3 phase CNC machines
  • CISCO RV345 router with 16 ports provides a 1-1 relationship with all internet facing workstations, 3 HP Printers, and until recently DVR for all installed CAMs.
  • Currently, have Spiceworks integrated with Desktop Central ManageEngine and Antimalwarebytes for Teams handling AV.

Over a two year period, I have completed 7 incident reports for management. As I eluded to above, the DVR for all the CAMs is no longer being handled by the router. The CAM DVR is connected directly to the same gateway that has a StaticIP, and the router is connected to the 2nd gateway running with DHCP.

This change was made due to 2 DDoS attacks that came from two sources: Microsoft and one of our customers. The router did its job and prevented a sustained attack and loss of internet bandwith. The aftermath of the attacks had log errors indicating BCAP errors (30plus per day). A month after the attacks, a firmware update and signature update became available and were applied. The aftermath of doing the updates forced me to turn off the webfilters that will fill up the 4096kb logs in about 1.5 days.

I really can't say anything negative about TAC Support from CISCO, Sales on the other hand has me believing the company I work for is not big enough to even call back, reply back to the online forms I filled out, and the reseller I contacted is also perplexed in the delays he is experiencing and suggested that there may be problems with their small business router line.

I am looking for a replacement that can create VLANs and establish rules so I can allow by exception and don't need to replace the hardware in 2 years. I have a meeting scheduled for 4/29 @ 6am to discuss what candidates are available; and I work for a company that would be willing to buy the better option (like the CAT8) for longevity and security reasons.

  • Last item: NO WiFi or Cloud access here all must be on-premise per management

Thankyou in advance for any and all efforts made towards a solution

Our router had 10 VLANs deployed and 1 high speed switch serving up 3 static IP printers. The reality is that we have more drops than ports on the router, we are closer to 24 in the event we wanted to make every drop live. I thank you for your input on this and in the firewall competition it will be a show down between the PA-3200 series and SonicWall NSa2700 series.

Its nice to confirm and learn something new, I consider this topic closed for my sake

  • kevinmhsieh May 3, 2021 at 20:30 UTC

10 VLANs can mean 1 port. The firewall ports are not switch ports. You cannot connect 10 devices on the same subnet to 10 different ports on the firewall. You need to connect the Palo Alto firewall to to a switch.

Making Strides in 5G

Last year, NETGEAR worked with AT&T to help make the carrier the first in the U.S. to offer a mobile 5G device, the NETGEAR Nighthawk® 5G Mobile Hotspot, over a commercial, standards-based mobile 5G network. Our 5G mobile hotspot was released in December, and was available across 12 cities.

After this first taste of the mobile 5G era, 5G+ coverage is now available throughout 19 cities and counting. NETGEAR is now thrilled that AT&T has achieved another 5G milestone late last month, when our Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot hit peak speeds surpassing 2 gigabits per second on AT&T’s live commercial 5G network in Atlanta. This is blazing fast, as a sustained speed like this is equivalent to downloading a two-hour HD movie in 10 seconds.

Strides are continuously being made in the 5G network, and are transforming the future of wireless speeds. AT&T is already working to implement 5G technology in various industries, such as movie studios, construction companies, and architectural design firms.

Why Power over Ethernet Promises a Huge Revolution for Security Cameras

With millions of active video surveillance cameras in use around the world, they’ve proven to be a highly effective way for businesses to maintain safety and security. However, installation and maintenance can often be a complicated process for traditional cameras that require separate cabling for both power and data, making them costly to install. Power over Ethernet (PoE) simplifies IP camera installation, with both power and data carried over a standard network cable. Using PoE means less modification to your premises, requires no electrician or building permit, and will need less maintenance. Supported by an increasing number of new cameras, the PoE standard can deliver power to even high-end devices, making advanced monitoring systems available to a wider range of organizations.

In the United Kingdom, surveillance cameras have been a security success story. Of the estimated six million surveillance cameras in use, the overwhelming majority are operated by private companies as a means for keeping their business premises safe. Their visibility reassures customers and staff, and the footage they produce often provides valuable answers in the event of any incident.

At a former company I worked at...my last project was to install POE cameras site wide. They installed 32 of them and had room for another 32 should they decide they needed them. With them running over a standard ethernet cable and running with an IP address installation was super easy. It was no different than adding any other network device. Just need to remember the bandwidth they take up. The more cameras you add...the more bandwidth you need.

802.11Q VLAN tagging passthrough

I have AP's that VLAN tag for secondary and tertiary wireless networks through 2 Netgear switches.

- Netgear JFS524e

- Netgear GS748T

I'm having issues seeing any VLAN traffic beyond either of these switches.
What config can i use to allow 802.11Q passthrough?

Even though there is an option for 802.11Q VLAN tagging in the ProSAFE Plus Config App, it appears that the JFS524e switch cannot pass 802.11Q vlan tag nor tag it properly.... despite many applications and reboots. I also see no way to upgrade firmware or firmware availability.

However, the GS748T does indeed pass 802.11Q VLAN tagging and has been setup properly.

Let me know if there are any other suggestions regarding the JFS524e.

Thank you for your insight and help on this matter.

  • trinas Jun 25, 2019 at 22:00 UTC

I wonder if you move that particular WAP into VLAN 1 if that would work on the JFS524e switch. Otherwise, you may need to upgrade that switch from what I can tell.
